The VI International Seabed Cleanup Withdraws 5,5 tons of waste

This VI International Seabed Cleanup, that has taken place in the past 26 September, has been carried out simultaneously in 40 points in Spain, as well as in other countries such as Brazil, Peru or Colombia.

Marina del Este has joined this initiative by collaborating with the transfer of a vessel to bring waste removed by divers from the sea floor to the shore, as well as providing several containers to sort each trash in place for further recycling. Cleaning in this area has taken place from the beach of the exit of the port to the Rock of the Wolf. This activity, coordinated by the GEA Volunteering Association, in Granada, declared a Public Utility Entity and the Marine Watchdogs Network, won last year the Maritime Rescue Award, granted by the Ministry of Development, "Best awareness-raising initiative for the protection of our seas".

The Great International Seabed Cleanup is feasible thanks to the personal involvement of the more than a thousand divers who make up the Marine Watchdog Network. This Network is an initiative of the NGO Oceánidas composed mostly of divers who, voluntarily, are involved in the conservation of sea-linked species through protection efforts, research and disclosure of the marine environment. In his performances, as is the case with this joint fund cleanup, the organization is supported by the Spanish Association of Marine Waste (AEBAM) and the Zero Spills Association.

This team of volunteers from virtually every autonomous community and city has joined forces to remove waste from the seabed simultaneously. Thanks to this campaign, almost 5,5 tons of rubbish. This year, a large number of masks and gloves used for the prevention of COVID-19 have been removed, so people are called upon about the need to prevent these objects from reaching the sea.

All waste collected by Network volunteers is separated by categories and accounted for. The data obtained in this campaign are incorporated into that of citizen science of '1m2 by the beaches and seas' of the LIBERA Project and will be integrated into the database of the Ministry for Ecological Transition. To do this, the MARNOBA mobile app is used, developed by the Zero Spills Association and KAI Marine Services, a platform that collects, stores and displays information about marine litter off the coast of Spain. In this way, information is obtained that allows to acquire a greater knowledge of the type of waste that appears in the marine environment, about their origin and preferred routes of transport and deposition.
